Sponsor Family Members

As a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, you may have the opportunity to sponsor certain family members for immigration to the United States. The sponsorship process allows eligible individuals to help their close relatives obtain lawful permanent resident status, also known as a green card.

There are different categories of family-sponsored visas, including immediate relatives and preference categories. Immediate relatives, which include spouses, unmarried children under 21, and parents of U.S. citizens, have no numerical limitations and can typically obtain visas more quickly. Preference categories, on the other hand, include unmarried adult children, married children, and siblings of U.S. citizens, as well as spouses and unmarried children of lawful permanent residents. These categories have annual numerical limits, and there may be waiting periods before a visa becomes available. To sponsor a family member, you will generally need to file a petition with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), provide supporting documents, and demonstrate the qualifying relationship. Sponsoring family members for immigration is a significant responsibility, and it is advisable to consult with an immigration attorney to understand the specific requirements and ensure a smooth and successful sponsorship process.
